Another look at mighty walls of Monteriggioni. A hilltop village fortress was founded in 1213 by Sienese goverment to repel florentine incursions  into the area. Circular walls were built between 1213-19 and they are a pretty impressive sight. E.g. Dante mentions Monteriggioni in Divina Commedia.
“As with circling round
Of turrets, Monteriggioni crowns his walls;
E’en thus the shore, encompassing the abyss,Was turreted with giants, half their lengthUprearing, horrible, whom Jove from heaven
Yet threatens, when his muttering thunder rolls.”
